!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Not for me, but for a friend who’s been cycling to work all summer and wants a car again before the rain really sets in.
160k miles, american import for some reason I guess. “Car not start”
But, $500. That’s a seriously clean car for $500. Just gotta figure out the not starting thing...

This strikes me as a bad idea.

Well he’s by no means set on buying it, I just figured it was worth looking at in person and seeing if the not starting is something obvious. If it seems like too much of a risk I’ll steer him away from it. I remember you saying that by now, these ones are starting to have old-age issues

Isn’t there an old Chinese proverb, something like “there’s nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes”...
If it were something simple it would already be fixed.

Haha yes, that is a thing.
Probably yeah, but sometimes there are deals. I mean the guy could be stupid and the battery is just dead

But it was Aristotle who posited “every used Mercedes is a $20,000 car, pay now or pay later”

What about a cheap Audi?

Certainly possible. Just don’t let your friend become too attached.
Real life just happened example. Guy buys old non-running AMG for $2500. Car will crank but only periodically backfire. Long story short, he already put another $2500 into fixing it but still needs $3500 more just to get it running. It was the weirdest no start diagnosis I’ve ever done. The point being, for what he paid and still needs to spend to get it running he could have bought an immaculate running version of the same car.

Lol from what I’ve seen even worse.
Are you still tying to find a new car?

This is either going to be an amazing $500 car or nightmare $500 car there is no in between with an ad like that.

Yeah. It’s just whatever. If I didn’t have my pickup I think I’d lose my mind.

What are you looking for?

It’s all over the map. I even looked at a 318ti for goodness sakes.

Yeah that’s very true haha. I wound up talking him out of it before we went to see it, he needs to save a bit more money before he buys anything

Oh god, that sounds awful. This one definitely isn’t gonna be bought, I found out my friend needs more money set aside before he thinks about buying anything

We all have that friend who bought a non-running $500 car, dropped in a battery and drove it trouble free. I’m not that guy.

See, this sounds like a very interesting story. I’d like to hear the gory details. Starting with what kind of old AMG only costs $2500.

Wow. So not even a type of vehicle nailed down? Like awd wagon or something?

Maybe I’ll make a post later. I don’t want to be too specific and call someone out, because it will be fairly obvious to anyone who knows the person. So I’ll give it a few days at least, and still leave the model out.

I do have that friend, it’s definitely not this one

I can with almost 95% certainty that the reason this car won’t start is because of the distributor cap and rotor or the OVP relay. Them both brand new are less than $200
(I’ve had 6 190e’s over the last 2 year )

Hmmm that makes it more tempting. If it’s still around after my friend has some more spare cash, maybe we’ll actually check it out
